GEDEX is prepared to be used in Local Computer Networks, as well as isolated.
GEDEX can be used on isolated computers, both on computers without an Internet connection and on computers without connection to other computers on the Local Network. This requires single computer usage licenses or sporadically, networked client usage licenses.
GEDEX can be used on computers that are connected to a Local Network, since it is not affected by the other computers present on it. You can use GEDEX in this way with any type of usage licenses, even single computer licenses.
For example, you can install and use GEDEX on a single computer in your office, even if that computer is connected to your Local Network with hundreds of computers.
This document describes the necessary steps so that the computers with usage licenses of the networked client type and the GEDEX server type can communicate.
A GEDEX Local Network is the set of computers belonging to a Local Network in which GEDEX is installed on all of them. Computers on a Local Network where GEDEX is not installed are not considered to belong to the local GEDEX network. Simply, a Local Network usually consists of all the computers you have connected to your router or switch.
At least one of the GEDEX Local Network computers must have a GEDEX Network Server type use license, and the rest, networked client usage licenses (also called network clients).
If you have several usage licenses as a Network Server, you can form several subnets of GEDEX, in which the files and contacts will be different. Each subnet is really an independent GEDEX Local Network.
If you already have a machine dedicated to perform local network server functions, you can use that same machine as a GEDEX network server.
In any case, you can use any computer that is capable of sharing network resources to all the computers where you intend to install GEDEX. For instance, a Windows 10 computer. In local peer-to-peer networks, we recommend that you choose the most modern computer or the computer that stays on the longest throughout the day as the server.
The GEDEX Database will unfailingly be located on a local disk drive of the GEDEX network server machine.
Install GEDEX normally. Once installed, proceed to activate it.
Finally, start GEDEX and press the F8 key, or open the Configuration menu → Local network and internet → Configure local network.
Answer the series of questions that will be asked and take note of the name of the machine you are using as the GEDEX server (the program will indicate the name or your server computer).
You should then share the database folder normally called C:\GEDEX so that it is shared with the network resource name GEDEX$ (dollar-terminated). Refer to and print for instructions on how to do a manual configuration of the shared folder and access permissions.
Finally, a screen should appear with the following message:
Before installing on the network stations, install and activate the GEDEX Server, as explained above.
Install GEDEX in each network station normally. Once installed, proceed to activate it.
Finally, start GEDEX and press the F8 key, or open the Configuration menu → Local network and internet → Configure local network.
Answer the series of questions that will be asked, and when the program asks what is the name of the server machine, type the name that you wrote down earlier.
If a message is displayed, stating that you could not connect to the server, check again the instructions for Manual configuration of the shared folder and access permissions.
In many offices it is common to use a computer as a server that remains switched off at night. In the morning it requires the first user of the network to physically access it to simply press the power button.
By using a Wake on LAN system (for instance our BriWake plug-in) you can turn on the GEDEX Server computer from any of your network stations, using an icon on your desktop. No need to press the server power button.
Please search among the messages below the message that GEDEX has shown you:
This message indicates that a computer with a networked client usage license did not manage to connect to the GEDEX server computer.
We recommend that you close GEDEX, and run the following command line (you can press Windows + R to execute):
Start > Execute... \\server\gedex$
Replace "server" with the true name of your server machine. Windows should display a folder with the content shared from the server or an error. Windows usually takes a minute or two, don't despair.
Solution 1: Take note of the error message that Windows displays and try to resolve it by speaking to the technical staff who have set up your local network; Usually, the problem is usually solved by granting permissions to the group of users who access this resource, or directly to the user who is logged on to the machine.
Solution 2: You have solutions to common problems in the Manual setup instructions for shared folder and access permissions.
Solution 3: If you cannot use the shared resource, or if the server does not share it, we recommend that you change the default location of the database to use C: \ GEDEX \ following these instructions.
The server computer has not been able to share the GEDEX $ network resource either because it does not have sufficient network permissions or because it has already shared another folder on its server with the name GEDEX or GEDEX $
Solution: close GEDEX and repeat F8 again and choose Manual sharing mode. Review the instructions for Manual setup of the shared folder and access permissions.
You have not shared the network resource GEDEX $ with sufficient network permissions or you already have another folder shared on your server with the name GEDEX or GEDEX $
Solution: Close GEDEX, start GEDEX on the server, tap on the F8 server and choose Manual sharing mode. Review the instructions for Manual setup of the shared folder and access permissions.
Make sure you have successfully activated the computer where you are setting up your network. Without activating it is not possible to configure a local GEDEX network.
If your use license is Single-user, you cannot form a local GEDEX network with it. Contract another type of usage license, or reconfigure the local GEDEX network, indicating to the program that you do not have a network.
Make sure you have successfully activated the computer where you are setting up your network. Without activating it is not possible to configure the GEDEX local network server.
Solution 1: Contract another type of usage license, or reconfigure the local network of GEDEX correctly, indicating to the program that you do not have a network or indicating which is the real GEDEX local network server computer.
Solution 2: If you enter a loop of repetitive questions, remember that as long as the software is not activated, you must answer that you are not going to use it on a network.
Your user license does not allow you to isolate your computer from the other computers on your local GEDEX network. For example, a computer with a license to use the network, needs to be in contact with the server to access the database of files and contacts.
Solution: Contract another type of usage license, for example Single. You will be able to use GEDEX in your new office, independent of your old colleagues.
